COHERENT STRUCTURES IN A TURBULENT CHANNEL FLOW
M. A. Green, C. W. Rowley & G. Haller*

We use a method called Direct Lyapunov Exponent to identify coherent structures in a turbulent channel flow. The plane on the top is at a constant distance from the channel wall. In the lower two images, the channel walls are at the top and bottom. The top image is a plane seen by looking down the channel, and the bottom image is a plane seen from looking from the side of the channel. Structures are outlined in black, and are more dominant near the walls, as expected. See also hairpin vortex.
