Lifting a Paper

Materials:

Two sheets of paper

A straw

Procedure: Poke a hole in the center one piece of paper. Insert the straw into the hole so that paper is at one end of the straw. Hold the paper/straw combo about a centimeter above the second piece of paper and blow through the straw. The lower piece of paper will rise to meet the paper/straw combo.

Explanation: Generally speaking, the greater a fluid’s velocity, the lower it’s pressure. So the high velocity air exiting the straw has a lower pressure than the surrounding air. Consequently the lower piece of paper has lower pressure air above and higher pressure air below which forces it to up.
