Hairdryer Magic

  Materials:

  • A working hairdryer
  • A pingpong ball
  •

Procedure: Aim the hair dryer straight up and turn it on. Gently place the ping pong ball in the airstream and let it go, you should be able to keep the ping pong ball floating in the airstream above the hairdryer. With a little practice, you should be able to keep the ball in the airstream even if you hold the hairdryer at an angle!

Explanation: Generally speaking, the greater a fluid's velocity, the lower its pressure. So the high velocity air exiting the hair dryer is at a lower pressure than the surrounding, low velocity/high pressure air. This surrounding high pressure keeps the ping pong ball in the low pressure/high velocity air above.
