Proposal # 0645846: Interactive Undergraduate Fluid Mechanics
NSF Program: CTS
Principal Investigators: Rich Wlezien, Clancy Rowley, Lex Smits, Chris Rogers
Tufts and Princeton Universities

Mission: The mission of this grant is to provide tools to increase the amount of interactivity in the first course in fluid mechanics by developing a gallery of sample hands-on projects on eFluids.

The Idea: Our idea is to bring together experts in fluid mechanics education and develop a coherent set of experiments and demos for the classroom to help students understand the fundamentals of fluid mechanics. These experiments will be split into three types: no-cost, low-cost, and more complex "canonical" experiments. They will become part of the eFluids Gallery of Experiments.

Outcomes: We held our first workshop at Tufts with 15 participants. The main outcomes of the workshop were: (1) identified major concepts to be addressed, (2) developed table of contents for the website, (3) identified mentor from the group for 13 experiments to cover the concept areas, and (4) developed a timeline for the deliverables. Our goal is to reorganize and produce 13 instructional experiments on our website over the next year.

eFluids Educational Focus: eFluids is committed to supporting education if fluid dynamics through its many offerings. Its contributions and potential are defined in eFluids Educational Focus. They include:
  • Gallery of Flow Images

  • Gallery of Experiments

  • Gallery of Problems

  • Fluid Flow Calculators and Applets

  • Educational Tools and Materials

  • Student Competitions
